STAR TREKâ„¢ Challenges are now live!
The Taj Mahal is one of the new seven Wonders of the World and it is not difficult to see why. Its sheer size and perfect symmetry inspire awe and draw millions of visitors every year.
The Taj Mahal was constructed by Shah Jahan to honor the memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth. They say that the empress, with her dying breath, asked that a mausoleum be built in her name, larger and more impressive than anything else in the entire world.
Construction started in 1631 and was completed in 1653, a mere 22 years later. While it was initially named “Rauza-i-munawwara” (illustrious tomb) but was later renamed to “Taj Mahal”, which, while literally meaning “The Crown of the Palace”, cleverly includes the name of the empress, to whom it was dedicated.
